Metal Expansion Joints & Compensators

Grooved-End Bellows Expansion Joint

The Grooved-End Bellows Expansion Joint is a metal bellows compensator designed to absorb primarily axial thermal movement in grooved piping systems while providing a fast mechanical end connection for HVAC, fire-protection and industrial service.

Also searched as a grooved bellows expansion joint, grooved end metal expansion joint, groove-type bellows joint or grooved bellows compensator.

Project Configuration

Mingchao can customize the product configuration based on the technical information, operating conditions and dimensional data you provide. Final configuration can be reviewed and manufactured to the approved project drawing.

Grooved-End Bellows Expansion Joint Overview

The Grooved-End Bellows Expansion Joint combines a corrugated metal bellows element with grooved-end pipe connections to provide compact axial thermal-movement compensation in grooved piping systems.

Its primary function is to absorb expansion and contraction along the pipe axis while reducing thermal stress transmitted to connected piping and equipment. Mingchao catalog also identifies limited lateral and angular movement capability, subject to the selected configuration and piping design.

The grooved-end connection is particularly useful where grooved piping is already used for HVAC, fire-protection, building-services or industrial systems and fast mechanical installation is required.

Technical Specifications & Axial Compensation

The confirmed product data below identifies the published design range and primary movement function. Exact axial compensation and dimensional values are confirmed according to the selected size and project conditions.

Design Pressure0.25–2.5 MPa
Design Temperature-20°C to +400°C

CustomizationWave number, length and materials according to confirmed project requirements

Final axial compensation, length and dimensional configuration are confirmed according to the selected nominal size, pressure level, required movement and approved project drawing.

Grooved-End Connection & Pipe Compatibility

The grooved-end connection allows the expansion joint to be integrated into compatible grooved piping without a flanged connection at the joint itself. Selection must be based on the connected pipe outside diameter, groove configuration, coupling compatibility and required operating pressure.

Before production, confirm the grooved piping system or provide the relevant pipe and coupling dimensions so that the end connection can be matched to the project. Grooved-end dimensions and coupling compatibility are confirmed according to the connected piping system and approved project requirements.

Bellows Construction, Pressure & Temperature

The product uses a corrugated bellows section between grooved-end pipe connections. Limit rods are incorporated in the published Mingchao configuration to help control the permitted movement range. Limit rods are used to control the permitted movement of the expansion-joint assembly; they must not be assumed to replace required piping-system anchors.

The published design-pressure range is 0.25–2.5 MPa and the design-temperature range is -20°C to +400°C. Design pressure and design temperature must be selected together with nominal diameter, movement requirement, medium and piping layout.

Wave number, overall length and material configuration can be reviewed according to confirmed project requirements. Specific material grades are confirmed for the selected configuration.

Applications for HVAC, Fire Protection & Industrial Piping

HVAC & Chilled-Water Piping

Axial thermal-movement compensation in grooved HVAC and chilled-water piping.

Fire-Protection Piping

Grooved-end bellows connection for fire-protection piping where thermal movement must be accommodated according to the project design.

Building Services

Compact movement compensation for mechanical and utility piping in building-services installations.

Industrial Piping

Grooved-end thermal expansion compensation for industrial piping within confirmed pressure and temperature conditions.

Pump & Equipment Connections

Used where a grooved piping system requires controlled movement near connected equipment.

Thermal Expansion Compensation

In-line axial compensation where temperature changes cause pipeline expansion and contraction.

How to Select a Grooved Bellows Expansion Joint

Correct selection requires more than DN alone. The groove and coupling system must match the pipe connection, while bellows geometry must be selected for the required pressure, temperature and movement conditions.

  1. Nominal diameter / DN
  2. Pipe outside diameter
  3. Groove profile / grooved piping system
  4. Required coupling compatibility
  5. Design pressure
  6. Design temperature
  7. Medium
  8. Required axial compensation
  9. Expected lateral / angular movement if any
  10. Installed / face-to-face length
  11. Wave number if specified
  12. Material requirement
  13. Anchor / guide arrangement
  14. Quantity

Grooved Bellows vs. Grooved Flexible Metal Hose

Product TypeConfiguration
Grooved-End Bellows Expansion JointPrimary function: axial thermal expansion compensation. Flexible element: corrugated bellows. Connection: grooved ends. Movement character: primarily axial, with limited lateral or angular movement according to configuration. Typical selection: in-line thermal movement in HVAC, fire-protection and industrial piping.
Grooved-End Flexible Metal HosePrimary function: flexible equipment or piping connection and vibration isolation. Flexible element: corrugated hose with external braid. Connection: grooved ends. Movement character: flexible connection with axial, lateral and angular capability. Typical selection: pumps, compressors, equipment and flexible connections.

Installation, Anchoring & Guiding Considerations

Follow the approved product drawing and piping-system design for final installation.

Connection Compatibility

Verify the pipe OD, groove configuration and coupling compatibility before installation.

Installed Length

Confirm the required installed length and axial movement range.

Piping Alignment

Align the connected piping before final assembly.

Avoid Torsion

Do not twist the metal bellows.

Avoid Forced Correction

Do not use bellows deformation to correct excessive piping misalignment.

Movement Range

Keep movement within the confirmed product range.

Anchors, Guides & Supports

Install piping anchors, guides and supports according to the approved piping design.

Limit Rod Boundary

Do not assume limit rods replace required system anchors.

Protect Bellows

Protect the bellows from impact, welding slag and other mechanical damage.

Pressure Testing

Complete pressure testing only after the required piping supports and movement-control system are in place.
